This cabin was designed as an architectural folly inspired by New Zealand's beautiful Tongariro crossing. The cabin is placed within a rock garden with vantage points designed throughout the cabin to create different areas of intimacy with the landscape. The sunken lounge invites one to sit close to the landscape and enjoy the protection of an inside environment while being physically very close to the rock garden, while the upper bedroom enjoys spectacular views out of high level windows, inviting one to look up into the sky and out to the mountain peaks.
A metal ramp floats over the rock garden and leads to an entrance vestibule deliberately scaled to create a feeling of intimacy and protection from the elements. A small flight of stairs contained between two blade walls protects the interior from cold winds and enhances the interplay between the small scale of the entrance and the open expanse of views within the living area, accentuating the drama of the landscape.
Finishes are deliberately warm and earthy to create a feeling of warmth and comfort in an extremely cold environment, with warm lighting throughout and timber finishes to the walls, floor and ceilings. Window boxes in each bedroom provide additional seating nooks for reading, relaxing and enjoying the views.
